Areas of application

What vitamin C does in the body

Vitamin C is involved in numerous physiological processes. When administered intravenously, substantially higher plasma levels can be achieved than with oral intake.

Immune function

Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and is commonly used in times of increased physical or mental stress.

Collagen formation

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation and thereby supports the normal function of skin, blood vessels, cartilage and connective tissue.

Protection from oxidative stress

Vitamin C contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress and is therefore frequently used in integrative micronutrient protocols.

Energy metabolism

Vitamin C contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and may be considered in situations involving fatigue or increased nutritional demand.

Iron absorption

Vitamin C increases the absorption of non-heme iron and may be relevant in the context of identified nutritional deficiencies.

Glutathione-related pathways

Vitamin C is part of the body’s antioxidant network and is often used in protocols that also consider glutathione and related micronutrients.

What is included in the vitamin C infusion

Frequently asked questions about vitamin C infusion

Everything you need to know about the treatment process, ingredients and our practice in Berlin Mitte.

What is the difference between oral intake and infusion?

When taken orally, the bioavailability of vitamin C depends strongly on the dose and decreases at higher amounts due to intestinal saturation. Intravenous administration can achieve substantially higher plasma levels and bypasses the digestive tract.

Who may consider a vitamin C infusion?

Vitamin C infusions are commonly considered in situations involving increased physical or mental stress, recurrent infections, increased nutritional demand or individualized micronutrient strategies. High-dose infusion is contraindicated in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD), which we clarify in advance during a personal consultation.

How does an appointment at your practice work?

At the beginning, we briefly discuss your situation, goals and any relevant medical history. A venous access is then placed — the needle insertion usually takes only a few seconds. While the infusion runs (approx. 30–45 minutes), you can relax. At the end, we discuss how you feel and provide an individual recommendation for further steps.

Do I need to come fasting?

No. You should eat normally beforehand and make sure you are well hydrated. Good hydration also makes it easier to place the cannula. Arriving on an empty stomach is generally not recommended.

When might I notice a difference after the infusion?

Individual response may vary. Some people report feeling more refreshed shortly after the infusion, while other effects may only become noticeable over time, particularly when infusions are used as part of a broader treatment plan.

How often should a vitamin C infusion be repeated?

That depends on your individual situation and treatment goal. In some cases, a single infusion may be considered, while in others a short series over several weeks may be more appropriate. We are happy to advise you individually.

Is a blood test necessary before the infusion?

Not necessarily. In many cases, the infusion can be selected based on your symptoms and goals. If we suspect a specific deficiency or are planning a particularly high dose, we may recommend a blood test beforehand in order to tailor the infusion more precisely.

Are there any side effects?

In most cases, vitamin C infusion is well tolerated. However, as with any intravenous treatment, individual reactions may occur. That is why we take a brief medical history beforehand and review any pre-existing conditions, intolerances and possible contraindications.

Will health insurance cover the cost?

Statutory health insurance generally does not cover the cost of infusion therapies. Private health insurance plans often reimburse micronutrient infusions partially or in full, depending on the tariff. We issue an invoice according to GOÄ standards, which you can submit to your insurer.

Ingredient knowledge

Vitamin C — what is behind the molecule?

Ascorbic acid is more than a simple vitamin. It is involved in collagen synthesis, neurotransmitter formation, iron absorption and numerous enzyme systems.

  • Discovered in 1928 by Albert Szent-Györgyi — Nobel Prize in 1937
  • Humans cannot synthesize vitamin C themselves, unlike most mammals
  • Recommended daily intake according to the German Nutrition Society: 110 mg/day — therapeutic doses may be significantly higher
  • Clinical studies have shown intravenous plasma levels of up to 20,000 µmol/L
  • Works synergistically with glutathione, vitamin E and NAD+ as part of an antioxidant network
  • Vitamin C is actively concentrated in the adrenal glands — stress hormone synthesis requires vitamin C
