How Osteopathy Can Help During Pregnancy
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you'd like to know about osteopathy during pregnancy at our practice in Berlin.
Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?
▾Yes — osteopathy can be safely applied throughout all trimesters of an uncomplicated pregnancy. We exclusively use gentle techniques tailored to pregnancy. Before each session, we take a short medical history and check for any contraindications, so that your treatment is both safe and personalised.
When during pregnancy can I start osteopathy?
▾Osteopathic treatment is generally recommended from the second trimester onwards — many pregnant women come for their first session between weeks 16 and 20, when the belly starts growing and first complaints arise. For birth preparation, we recommend starting from week 34. In cases of acute complaints, treatment can begin earlier.
Which complaints can osteopathy help with during pregnancy?
▾Osteopathy can provide supportive treatment for a wide range of pregnancy-related complaints — including back pain, pelvic and sacroiliac joint pain, symphysis pain, sleep disorders, headaches, nausea, heartburn and abdominal pain. It is also beneficial for birth preparation and as ongoing support throughout all three trimesters.
What does a treatment session look like?
▾We begin with a thorough conversation about your complaints, your pregnancy and your goals. We then examine your body using gentle techniques and treat areas of tension and restriction with precision. Treatment takes place in a comfortable side-lying or seated position — always adapted to your trimester and your wellbeing.
How often should I come for osteopathy during pregnancy?
▾That depends on your complaints and goals. For acute issues, we recommend two to three sessions in close succession. For ongoing support throughout the pregnancy, monthly appointments work well. For birth preparation, two to three sessions in the last trimester are ideal. We will advise you individually at your first appointment.
What is birth preparation with osteopathy?
▾Osteopathic birth preparation focuses on the pelvis, pelvic floor and sacrum. The goal is optimal pelvic alignment, released tension in the soft tissue and good mobility of the pelvic joints — all of which can support a natural birth. Ideally, we start from week 34 of pregnancy.
How much does a session cost?
▾A session costs 125 euros. Many private health insurance plans and supplementary Heilpraktiker insurance policies cover osteopathic treatments partially or in full. Please check with your insurer beforehand. Statutory health insurers often contribute a fixed subsidy per session.
Does health insurance cover the costs?
▾Many statutory health insurers contribute a fixed amount per session — this varies by provider. Private health insurance plans often cover the costs in full depending on your tariff. We issue an invoice in line with the Heilpraktiker fee schedule (GebüH), which you can submit to your insurer.
